DETAILED INFORMATION

In addition to having improved resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, Hastelloy C22, also known as alloy C22, is an austenitic nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy. In addition to providing good resistance to oxidizing media, the high chromium content and molybdenum and tungsten content provide good resistance to reducing media.

Additionally, this nickel steel alloy has excellent resistance to oxidizing aqueous media such as wet chlorine or mixtures containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids containing chlorine ions. In addition to oxidizing acid chlorides, Hastelloy C-22 is also resistant to wet chlorine, formic and acetic acids, ferric and cupric chlorides, seawater, brine, and many other mixed or contaminated chemical solutions.

In multi-purpose plants, where such "upset" conditions often occur, this nickel alloy offers optimum resistance to reducing and oxidizing conditions. Due to its resistance to grain-boundary precipitates in the weld heat-affected zone, this nickel alloy is suitable for most chemical process applications as welded. As a result of the formation of detrimental phases, alloy C-22 should not be used above 1250°F.

With a nominal chemical composition of 56% nickel, 22% chrome, and 13% molybdenum, with additional iron, tungsten, and cobalt, alloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum solid solution strengthened superalloy. Known as Hastelloy C22 and UNS N06022, C22 has excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, great mechanical properties over a wide temperature range, and good fabrication properties.

C-22 has excellent resistance to aggressive oxidizing aqueous media, such as wet chlorine and mixtures containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids.

Unified Numbering System (UNS) number N06022 identifies Hastelloy C-22 as a nickel-based alloy with high nickel (56%), chromium (22%), and molybdenum (13%). There is the same UNS number for Werkstoff's number 2.4602, Inconel  Alloy 22, VDM ® Alloy 22, and ATI 22TM alloy.

Applications for C-22 include buffer solutions, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), fabric softeners, cleaning supplies, and fish, soy, and chili sauces.

When super austenitic stainless steels (AL-6XN®, 904L, and 254 SMO®) and duplex stainless steels (2205 and 2507) cannot withstand highly aggressive media, C-22 is a great alternative. A nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy, it has a better resistance to corrosion than other Ni-Cr-Mo alloys, such as Hastelloy C-276, C-4, and alloy 625, because it is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy.

As well as its excellent resistance to natural corrosion, intergranular corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, Hastelloy C-22 is used in many applications. Water treatment plants, chlorination plants, incinerators, and other applications use it because it is resistant to oxidizing and reducing conditions and prevents aqueous corrosion. A corrosion resistance test is conducted on the material of the C-22 wire. However, with the limited composition of the alloy, it is able to provide enhanced functionality due to its limited composition.

Known also as alloy C22, Hastelloy C22 is a highly versatile austenitic nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy with exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. With a high chromium content, this coating provides good resistance to oxidizing media while the molybdenum and tungsten content provide good resistance to reducing media. Moreover, this nickel steel alloy also has excellent resistance to oxidizing aqueous media such as wet chlorine and mixtures containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids containing chlorine ions as well as oxidizing media containing nitric acid. Additionally, Hastelloy C-22 is resistant to many other corrosives, such as oxidizing acid chlorides, wet chlorine, formic and acetic acids, ferric and cupric chlorides, sea water, brine, and many mixed or contaminated chemical solutions, both organic and inorganic.

This nickel alloy is also capable of providing optimum resistance to environments in which reducing and oxidizing conditions are encountered in the process stream. As a multi-purpose plant, where such "upset" conditions occur frequently, such a system is beneficial.

As-welded, this nickel alloy is able to resist the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the heat-affected zone of the weld, making it appropriate for most chemical process operations when used as-welded.

In order to avoid formation of detrimental phases, it is recommended that alloy C-22 should not be used in service temperatures above 1250°F due to the formation of detrimental phases at these temperatures.

It is used in highly corrosive media that contain high levels of chloride and high temperatures, such as buffer solutions, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), fabric softeners, cleaning supplies, and fish, soy and chili sauce.

The C-22 stainless steel offers a great alternative to the superaustenitic stainless steels (AL-6XN®, 904L, and 254 SMO®) and the duplex stainless steels (2205 and 2507) when they cannot withstand extremely aggressive media. As a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy, this alloy is more resistant to uniform and localized corrosion than any other Ni-Cr-Mo alloy. For instance, Hastelloy C-276, C-4, and alloy 625 are all alloys that are nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloys.

A nickel-chromium-molybdenum solid solution strengthened super-alloy composed of a nominal chemical composition of 56% nickel, 22% chromium, and 13% molybdenum, with additions of iron, tungsten, and cobalt, Alloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum solid solution strengthened super-alloy. The material is commonly known by the trade name Hastelloy® C22 and by the universal designation UNS N06022. In addition to being corrosion and oxidation resistant, C22 has excellent mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures, as well as good fabrication properties.

As a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy, HASTELLOY Alloy C-22 has an enhanced resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking as compared with other nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys. As a result of its ability to prevent the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the weld-heat affected zone, it is suitable for use as-welded. Because of its outstanding resistance to both reducing and oxidizing media, C-22 can be used wherever "upset" conditions are likely to occur as a result of its resistance to both media. As consumable electrodes and filler wires, it has been proven to possess excellent weldability as well as a high corrosion resistance. The alloy has been proven to be effective as a filler wire in a wide range of applications. In the event that other corrosion resistant wires have failed, you can use this wire as a filler wire.

It is easy to cold-work C-22 due to its ductility and cold-forming is the preferred method of forming this material due to its ductility. Due to the fact that austenitic stainless steels are generally stiffer than the alloyed stainless steels, more energy is required. It was found that a sheet of 0.28" thick, which was heat-treated at 2050°F, rapid quenched condition, has an average Olsen cup depth of 0.49".

Fabrication of Hastelloy C-22

Despite the fact that it is ductile enough to be formed by cold working, it may be necessary to perform an intermediate annealing process due to work hardening. It is recommended that the forging process be carried out between 1750 and 2050° F, followed by rapid cooling. During the annealing process, a temperature range of 2020-2150° F can be used followed by a rapid quench at a smaller temperature. As a result of cooling at an accelerated rate, detrimental phases are prevented from forming at temperatures between 1400 and 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. There are three types of welding available: gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and shielded metal arc welding.
