DETAILED INFORMATION

Developed specifically for chemical, oil & gas, deep water umbilical and deep water umbilical applications, hyper duplex grades meet the increasing demands of the chemical industry. Due to its corrosion resistance, such as pitting and crevice corrosion), and its high mechanical strength and tensile strength. Among the other properties of UNS S32707 2707 Hyper Duplex, there is its resistance to stress cracking caused by chlorine and sulphur, erosion corrosion, resistance to corrosion in acidic and alkaline environments, and its ability to weld well. They are therefore used as equipment in many industries, such as control lines, raw seawater injection lines, and chemical injection lines.

In order to reduce the gauging of the final product (lighter installations are the result), the Hyper-Duplex Stainless Steel's increased tensile strength could be used, thus proving to be an economically viable option without losing any of its corrosion resistance and strength. The Hyper-Duplex Stainless Steel Grade 2707 provides greater corrosion resistance, yield strength, and fatigue performance than other super duplex stainless steels. In the oil and gas industry, they are therefore used.

A Duplex stainless steel consists of two phases: ferrite and austenite in approximately equal amounts. As a result, they are both stronger, easier to weld, more tough and resistant to corrosion than austenitic stainless steels. Due to their lower nickel content, they are also more economically competitive than austenitic stainless steels.

Although duplex stainless steel was developed in Sweden in 1930, commercial production did not begin until the 1970s, due to its very complicated manufacturing process. Modern steelmaking techniques have made it easier to produce, resulting in a re-emergence of the metal. Although these stainless steels have significant advantages, they are still a relatively underutilized group, with about 1 - 3% of stainless steels being used globally due to their limitations.

Properties of Duplex Stainless Steel

Corrosion Resistance

As a result of chromium and molybdenum in combination, duplex stainless steel grades offer corrosion resistance properties comparable to those of austenitic steel grades. The higher the Chromium content, the more resistant it is to pitting and crevice corrosion. Pitting Resistance Equivalent Numbers (PRENs) are used to rank the grades according to their resistance to pitting corrosion. A higher PREN number indicates a stronger resistance to pitting corrosion.

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance

SCC is more common in austenitic grades, while ferritic grades are less likely to happen. Duplex stainless steels are more resistant to SCC than austenitic stainless steels but are inferior to ferritic stainless steels. SCC begins in austenitic regions in duplex stainless steels, but is arrested by a ferritic crystal structure present at the boundary, which prevents crack propagation and increases uptime.

Mechanical Strength

The mechanical strength of duplex stainless steel is higher than that of austenitic steels and ferritic steels. Due to its higher mechanical strength, duplex stainless steel machining is slower and more challenging than austenite. It allows thinner sections to be used, allowing for weight reduction.

Welding

Compared to austenite, welding is much more difficult. Close consideration must be given to the heat input and cooling rate in order to prevent the formation of intermetallic phases.

Advantage of Duplex stainless steel

When lighter fabrications are desired, higher strength enables thinner gauges to be used

  • The price of stainless steel is mostly driven by the price of one particular commodity, that of nickel. So the price of stainless steel is relatively immune to fluctuating commodity prices, as Duplex stainless steel has relatively low nickel content.

Applications and Uses of Duplex Stainless Steels

  • Various types of pressure vessels, tanks, pipework, and heat exchangers are used in chemical processing, transport, and storage
  • The piping, tubing, and heat exchangers required for oil and gas exploration and processing
  • Chloride-rich environments in the marine environment
  • The pulp and paper industry uses a variety of equipment for digestion, bleaching, and handling stocks
  • Tanks for ships and trucks that carry cargo
  • Machines used in food processing
  • Plants that convert biomass into fuels
