This 254 SMO Round Bar is an austenitic grade stainless steel with a chemical composition of nickel, chrome, and molybdenum. Round bars are used in various industries as long cylindrical metal stock. Due to the oxidation and corrosion resistance of these bars, the SMO 254 Round Bar possesses good mechanical properties. These bars have a minimum tensile strength of 650Mpa and a minimum yield strength of 300Mpa. It is possible to elongate all of these bars by 35%. 254 SMO® stainless steel bar, also known as UNS S31254, was developed originally to be used in seawater and other aggressive chloride-bearing environments. It is considered to be one of the best austenitic stainless steel grades available today; mainly comprised of between 19.5% and 20.5% chromium, 17.5% to 18.5% nickel, 6% to 6.5% molybdenum, and .18% to .22% nitrogen. The specific levels of Cr, Ni, Mo, and N in this "super austenitic" chemical makeup are the secret to 31254's ability to combine impact toughness with corrosion cracking resistance, as well as pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. In the end, this results in a stainless steel that is almost twice as strong as the 300 series stainless steel.
As a result of the molybdenum content in UNS S31254, it is commonly referred to as a "6% Moly" grade.
